Precarious Pete

$30.00
They called him Precarious Pete because no rope was too frayed, no barrel too brittle, and no stunt too foolish. Born in 1897 on the Canadian side of the river, Pete Pendleton grew up with a view of the roaring Horseshoe Falls and a heart full of mischief. By age ten, he was tightrope-walking between barn rafters. By twenty, he was performing handstands on the edge of the Skylon Tower—before it even had a guardrail.

But it was in 1925 that Pete cemented his legend. Clad in a pinstripe suit, leather boots, and a bowler hat he never removed, Pete climbed into a custom-built copper barrel lined with inner tubes and strapped with firecrackers. His plan? Ride over the Horseshoe Falls, detonate the fireworks mid-fall, and light a cigar on impact. Spectators laughed—until he actually did it.

The explosion created a plume so bright it was seen from Lewiston to Fort Erie. When the mist cleared, there stood Pete on the rocks below, soaking wet, suit smoldering, cigar lit—and grinning. “Could’ve used a softer landing,” he reportedly said, “but the show must go on.”

He attempted dozens of stunts after that: walking a line across the Whirlpool in high winds, bungee-jumping before bungee cords were invented (he used elastic from a haberdashery), and even skateboarding down Goat Island during a lightning storm.

No one knows what happened to Precarious Pete. He vanished in 1949 after announcing his final feat: to "leap the Falls on wings of wax and willpower." Some say he melted. Others say he flew. But every daredevil who’s tried since has lived in his shadow—because there will never be another Precarious Pete.
